Tips for Starting Your Career Change

When considering changing careers, either to a new job function or a different industry, check things out ahead of time so you will know what to expect before you make a move.

  • Start with your own personal network. Ask everyone you know if they know anyone connected to the industry that interests you. Make an appointment and interview each person to begin to gather good information.
  • Make sure to read industry trade journals to learn the terminology and future trends.
  • Surf the Web for available information. Be mindful to focus your search so you don’t get lost in the massive data available.
  • Identify contacts in the industry through trade associations. ( Check Gales Directory of Associations and the National Trade and Professional Association directory)
  • Arrange to meet with industry experts and conduct informational interviews.
  • Join the local branch of any trade association serving the industry that interests you. Attend meetings so you can hear about your prospective career first-hand.
  • Assess your skills and knowledge so you can see clearly how they can transfer to your new career.
  • Take relevant courses or volunteer in the new industry.
  • Allow for synchronicity. You will be amazed at how unforeseen incidents, meetings and assistance can happen.

Increasing your knowledge about a new industry will help you make a good decision and increase your comfort level.  Removing as much of the unknown as possible will make the move that much easier.
